How to Pick the Perfect Commercial Countertops for Kitchens

The commercial countertops in your facility’s kitchens need to be both durable and visually appealing, so choosing the perfect kind is no small task. Kitchen countertops go through heavy use in apartments, assisted-living facilities, hotels, restaurants, and other commercial buildings. Here’s a look at everything commercial counters need to be, and what types of countertops meet those requirements.

Criteria for Commercial Countertops in Kitchens

The kitchens in your facility need to have commercial countertops that meet the following criteria:

  • Stain-resistant – You can pick out the most beautiful countertops when designing the kitchens in your building, but if they aren’t stain-resistant, they won’t look nice for long.
  • Antimicrobial – Soft, porous materials have no place in kitchen countertops since they easily hold in germs and bacteria. It’s important to find a strong, nonporous material that is antimicrobial and resists bacterial growth.
  • Easy to clean – Commercial kitchens typically have code requirements for countertops to be non-porous and easy to clean. Bleach and other harsh chemicals are commonly used for cleaning commercial kitchen countertops so it’s important that they be easy to clean and sanitize.
  • Durable – The material you choose for countertops needs to be durable, but this might vary a little bit depending on how your kitchen countertops will be used. A kitchen in a restaurant, for example, will need to be able to withstand lots of chopping, sanitizing, and high heat around the clock. A hotel kitchenette, on the other hand, won’t be exposed to the same rigors. In both cases, you’ll want to choose a countertop that is strong, but the specific type of material may vary.

Best Types of Commercial Countertops

  • Stainless Steel – Restaurants and other foodservice locations use stainless steel countertops almost exclusively because it’s extremely durable and extremely hygienic. They don’t corrode or rust and are easy to clean, but they do scratch and dent easily so they’re best suited for kitchens that are less visible to the public.
  • Granite – Granite countertops have been a sign of elegance for years, and with good reason. Once they are sealed they offer excellent heat and stain resistance and overall durability. They look beautiful but need to be sealed about once a year to maintain their appearance and durability.
  • QuartzQuartz has recently become one of the most sought-after materials for kitchen countertops because it is non-porous, antimicrobial, easy to clean, and extremely durable. Unlike granite, quartz doesn’t need to be sealed so it’s much easier to maintain, and it comes in a variety of colors to suit any aesthetic.
