Commercial Countertop Maintenance: What You Need to Know

How you clean a commercial countertop depends a lot on what material it’s made out of, and some are easier than others. Higher-quality countertops require less maintenance. They last longer and are more durable than their less expensive counterparts. We recommend choosing the highest quality countertops for commercial buildings like apartment complexes, hospitality projects, and senior living facilities since they experience heavy use.

Here’s everything you need to know about maintaining your facility’s stainless steel, granite, and quartz countertops.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a popular choice for a commercial countertop because it’s durable, heat resistant, and very easy to clean. Countertops made of stainless steel are commonly found in food service establishments like restaurants, soup kitchens, cafeterias, and more. Maintaining them is relatively straightforward. Here are a few tips:

  • Avoid using steel wool, wire brushes, or scrapers on your stainless steel. These can scratch the countertops and cause damage to the protective coating.
  • Wipe down the countertops regularly to avoid pooling water and excess moisture.
  • Clean with soft water and gentle soap whenever possible. Hard water won’t do too much damage to your countertops, but it will leave you with lots of hard water spots that make them look unsightly.
  • Stainless steel needs to be sanitized frequently. Use a commercial-grade and food-safe sanitizer and a soft, microfiber cloth.

Granite

Granite countertops are reasonably low maintenance, but they do need regular cleaning. A soft cloth soaked in warm, soapy water is an effective cleaner that doesn’t take much time or effort. Just be careful that you avoid acidic cleaners like ammonia and vinegar, and don’t scrub them with rough sponges. These products can damage the surface and remove the sealant protecting your granite.

Quartz

There’s a reason quartz countertops are so popular in the commercial world – they’re virtually maintenance-free. Cleaning quartz is similar to cleaning granite. Use a soft cloth in warm soapy water to wipe them down whenever needed. However, the difference between the two stones is that quartz doesn’t need to be sealed, so you can scrape dried pieces of food and other gunk off the countertops with a putty knife without worrying about damaging the surface.

One word of caution with quartz countertops: while degreasers and other cleaners will work just fine, avoid using any cleaning agents containing bleach. Bleach can cause damage to your countertops, so if you have any stains that you’re struggling to remove, try rubbing alcohol instead.
