Countertops for Bathrooms: Types and Purposes

Choosing the type of countertops for bathrooms can feel daunting when it comes to building or remodeling commercial buildings.

The material you choose will greatly impact the appearance and functionality of the bathrooms in your building, whether it be a hotel, student housing, or senior living facility. So what type is best? That varies from project to project. Ultimately, the price, performance, and durability will determine what type of countertop is best suited to your needs.

Popular Countertops for Bathrooms

Here’s an overview of the different types of countertops for bathrooms available for commercial buildings and the purposes each serves.

  • Laminate countertops have been the most common material in bathrooms for generations. They’re inexpensive and made from layered plastic that bonds to MDF particleboard. Laminate has come a long way from when it was used in your grandparent’s bathrooms, and now it can be made to resemble wood, granite, and other materials. The cons? They’re lightweight, sometimes flimsy, and don’t generally hold up well to the demands of commercial spaces like hotels and apartments.
  • Porcelain or ceramic tile is another popular bathroom countertop material. Porcelain and ceramic are easy to install, a cinch to customize, and are customizable in any design. The options might be endless, but so is the care and maintenance. Grout lines are hard to keep clean and stain easily, and tile can crack easily.
  • Concrete is rising in popularity for bathroom countertops. It puts off an industrial vibe and offers great strength and durability. They can be polished and stained to create a customized look, but they’re nearly impossible to repair once damaged. These come at a higher price point than laminate but are not as expensive as granite or quartz.
  • Granite is easily the most common natural stone countertop because it’s readily available and has a good variety of colors. Granite countertops also look very high-end and luxurious. They do, however, require periodic sealing and maintenance and come at a higher price-point than some of the alternatives.
  • Quartz countertops are similar to granite, but instead of being made with 100% natural stone, they generally consist of 70 to 90% quartz mixed with resin to make a very durable, nonporous surface. They hold up well under heavy use and are virtually maintenance-free because they don’t need to be sealed. Quartz does come with a higher cost, but it is an excellent choice for commercial bathrooms because bacteria, mold, and mildew can’t penetrate the surface.
